Nancy Drew Fabric Contest - Entry #1

Fabric Contest Entry #1
Concept Quilts/Julie

Sleuth Bill Land received a super fun quilt from his friend Julie and he's entering this into the contest for her--her Blog is Concept Quilts.

Some comments from her Blog post about this quilt:

"To me, Nancy is the most potent source of nostalgia in the universe – my introduction to actual “books” and the world of mystery!... This quilt was made for my friend Bill, a truly loyal Nancy Drew fan, collector, and expert on all things Nancy.  Bill never fails to take the adversities that life unfairly tosses his way and find his own silver linings.  I felt that this deserved some sort of reward...And so... The Mystery of the Charmed Quilt came into being.  Why “Charmed”?  The Nancy Drew squares were purchased as pre-cut 5x5” squares, called “charm squares” according to official quilting terminology.  I went with a white background, and of course, yellow was a given.  It’s the colour I most associate with the covers of the classic Nancy Drew books."

Here are more images of the quilt, for more info on how she put it together, visit her blog.

Nancy Drew Get a Clue Fabric Blog Party & Contest

Nancy Drew Fabric Blog
Party & Contest

Have you got clues with the new Get a Clue fabric from Moda? I've seen so much creativity out there with the new fabric, we carry quite a bit of items using it in our Drewtique, and there was a recent 2 week Blog Hop devoted to the fabric! Several creative Nancy fans have sent in entries for our week long contest.

I will be highlighting those entries all week here at the Nancy Drew Sleuth Blog with several each day and then on Friday a poll will be added to the right side of the Blog for voting on your favorite--we'll have voting up for 1 week from the 29th of March through April 4. Prizes will be awarded to the top votes on April 5.

I'll also be including some interesting fabric ideas and items I've been seeing for fun throughout the week plus a shower curtain project...

I admit I'm biased, but one of my favorites so far I've seen from fabric is the quilt my Mom is making me using the whites/yellows/blues - it should be a nice Queen Size quilt once completed:

Then we'll be on to quilt #2 after this in reds. Then something more stylized and customized with Nancy Drew blocks and silhouettes. The possibilities are endless--the one caveat though is the book spine fabric. It sold so quick everywhere and I wasn't able to wholesale it from Moda, so I've purchased up some, but not as much as I'd like to have--so, like some other collectors, I almost want to hoard it :) It's one of my favorites.

You are going to see some really creative projects all week long here, so grab your magnifying glasses and your measuring tape and join in this week!

Here are the prizes:

Nancy Drew Charm Packs

Nancy Drew Key Chain Watch

Nancy Drew Coin Purse

Nancy Drew White Endpaper Fabric

Nancy Drew Layer Cake

Nancy Drew Press Photos

Nancy Drew Photo Collectibles

In recent months I've collected some press photos that I wanted to share here. The one above is a publicity still from the Lucas Films Young Indiana Jones and shows a scene from the episode where Indy's girlfriend is "Nancy Stratemeyer," daughter of the "author of the Nancy Drew mysteries." The episode featured Edward Stratemeyer and Thomas Edison. I loved finding this press photo since I was involved in helping out with the bio documentaries filmed as educational/background material for the DVD release of the Young Indiana Jones Adventures for the Stratemeyer documentary.

This press photo was used for an article on Nancy Drew to show how she had changed through the years.

I was especially happy to get this picture of Harriet Adams--it's wallet sized and features Harriet's signature - this was a press photo the Syndicate sent out to media. When I was at the New York Public Library last October doing research in the Stratemeyer archives, I came across some photos in several folders just like this one used for publicity.

This photo I enjoyed getting too as it was used for the 50th anniversary of Nancy Drew in 1980 and features Harriet posing in front of Syndicate series including Nancy Drew and also shows some foreign editions.

Last but not least, this is a press photo from the Nancy Drew 1995 T.V. Series featuring Tracy Ryan as Nancy Drew. I don't have a lot of items from the 1995 T.V. series, so I'm always happy to find them. What I like about the photo is that it shows Nancy and George sleuthing--Nancy's picking a lock and George is holding a flashlight.

Cooking with Nancy Drew: Asia & Stir Fry

Tour of Asia - Nancy Drew Style
Asian Stir Fry & Fried Rice

Take a tour of Asia with Nancy Drew and enjoy a delicious stir fry while you're at it! Here are four Nancy Drew books set in Asia - Hong Kong and Japan - where Nancy travelogues her way around the culture and sights and enjoys the local dishes!

#38 The Mystery of the Fire Dragon

Nancy stumbles upon a mystery involving a strange bookshop, codes in books, and a kidnapped Chi Che Soong (who her chum George manages to resemble strangely enough...) which leads the gang to Hong Kong to match wits with ruthless smugglers.

#56 The Thirteenth Pearl

Nancy finds herself touring Japan in this mystery involving a "pearl cult" front for an international ring of jewel thieves. We also learn that 4 + 9=13. Numerous times!

Nancy Drew Files #96 Runaway Bride

Nancy's friend Midori is getting married so Nancy goes to Japan to attend the wedding--only the bride disappears before the wedding ceremony and Nancy must get to the bottom of her friend's disappearance.

Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys SuperMystery Tour of Danger

Nancy Drew tangles with smugglers again while the Hardy Boys are on the hunt for counterfeiters--and their cases are connected. Shocker!

Pork Fried Rice & Veggie Stir Fry

The key to stir fry is chopping--don't leave things too big--everything needs to be sliced so that it cooks fairly quickly. I used broccoli, yellow onion, green onion, mushrooms, snowpeas, water chestnuts, and bean sprouts in this veggie stir fry. Anything goes, so use your favorites. Broccoli cut into chunks has to be cooked a very long time to get to the right level of crispness--not enough and it still tastes raw. You don't want overcooked mushy broccoli either. So, slice each piece into thin pieces. Sometimes it's best to cook the broccoli to desired crispness and then transfer to a dish while cooking the rest of your veggies to ensure it doesn't get overcooked.

I have managed to time mine well in that I start off using some olive oil in a skillet or wok pan, add the broccoli and stir fry for several minutes then add the onion and water chestnuts for another minute or so, then the mushrooms and some green onions. I add the beansprouts and snowpeas at the last to ensure they're not overcooked as well--you want them to add a nice crunch. I add some soy sauce to add a bit of taste to everything. Then I add a little bit of water to the pan to create a rush of steam then take the pan off the burner and put on a lid to steam for about a minute or so. That usually sets everything. Then remove the lid as you don't want to keep cooking. There are stir fry sauces you can make up to add to your stir fry or good ones you can get at the store. Sesame oil, hot chile oil, oyster sauce, rice wine vinegar can liven up a stir fry.

For the fried rice, I cut up boneless pork chops either into small strips or small cubes, toss in a little bit of cornstarch and stir fry. Remove once done. Then you stir fry thinly sliced or shredded carrots until just done, remove from the pan. I stir fry green onions and add garlic, then a little dash of soy sauce. I usually push these to the edge of the pan and then add 2 eggs that have been whisked to the pan and let them set up for a few seconds then I take my spatula and start turning and chopping a bit until the eggs are the right consistency--I don't want fried eggs, but I don't want completely scrambled either. Back in goes the pork and carrots and the boiled rice. Then I add soy sauce to taste and stir fry this until it's nice and combined for several minutes. I always use the reduced sodium soy sauce.

Nancy Drew Books & Collectibles at eBay

Nancy Drew eBay Finds

Here are some recent finds from eBay that I'll group together in this posting since they relate to the Nancy Drew Files series which was in print from 1986 to 1997 with 124 titles. This was a spin off series to the regular classic Nancy Drew series. The classic Nancy Drew books were for the 8 or 9 to 12 year old set. The Files were for teens and they involved more romance and even murders. I liked them a lot-these came out when I was in high school and I enjoyed reading these in addition to the classics. I wouldn't mind seeing these repackaged and released again with new covers!

Above and right below are images of some hardcover Files books - by Cover Craft which I recently found in a buy it now lot at eBay. I hadn't seen these before so I was excited to find them.

I'm always looking for box sets too and spotted this one that I didn't have.

And last but not least, this photo was used for an article when the Files series debuted and was being sold by a newspaper archive - it was nice that it was in color as sometimes they are in black and white.

It often goes in spurts lately at eBay where I will sometimes find a lot of things at once like all of these items. So, if you've given up looking at eBay since it's mostly a lot of new and the same old re-listings at times, keep checking as there's always something I find weekly!

Chapter 1: The Missing But Fabulous Fabric Puzzler...

Grab your magnifying glass and let's get to the bottom of this puzzler! For fans of Nancy Drew from the casual reader to the "obsessed" collector, the new Nancy Drew Get a Clue Fabric by Moda has been a fantastic product. Unfortunately, possibly due to marketing that didn't hit all target audiences and persnickety quilt shop owners (so says the clues among a few quilting experts and enthusiasts), not enough quilt shops carried this line of fabric, so Moda only printed a certain amount ordered and then some. They have no plans for another printing of the fabric nor a new line which is too bad--this was the latest news I heard as of January this year, perhaps things have changed since... I hear it has sold very well at quilt shops and has sold out in some places online--especially the book spine styles. They were very popular and went quick.

Being a Nancy Drew consultant, I always try to explain to companies that license Nancy Drew, that what sells best is classic Nancy Drew - the books that were printed from 1930 to 1979, #'s 1 - 56 from The Secret of the Old Clock to The Thirteenth Pearl. There were three cover illustrators during this period. The Rudy Nappi art and a couple of Bill Gillies covers are still in print as the series is still being reprinted and sold. It would appear that the most coveted art, however, is the Russell H. Tandy art from the 1930s to 1940s which is no longer in print due to covers being revised over the years. So for fans young and old--many of the younger fans love the vintage Tandy too--the Tandy sells more in my Nancy Drew Sleuth Shop--over the more modern classic art. So I always tell people to include a mix of styles to satisfy even the most picky fans. There was no Tandy art in the Moda collection--unless you count the silhouette endpapers which feature the 1930s silhouette designed by Tandy as well as other silhouettes. Since many quilt shop owners tend to be from the generations whose Nancy Drew books would have mostly featured the Russell H. Tandy art--some of which was still in print through the 1960s, I was told by a quilter that quite a few of the shop owners she knows passed on the fabric because it wasn't "their Nancy" or the  art was unfamiliar to them. While I can't solve this puzzling conundrum now as to the who's and whys of why some shops ordered and others didn't, I can tell you that of the fabric I was able to order for The Sleuth Shop from Moda, the vintage silhouette endpapers has been the most popular style. It is one of my favorites outside of the book spines. However, I love it all because I grew up reading the Nancy Drew books in the 1970s and 1980s+, so what I grew up with is featured heavily in the fabric--the books at that time had revised covers like the ones shown on the book panel fabrics.

As well as the fabric has sold from the shops that did order it and as little fabric as Moda has left available to order, I was hoping that they might consider a reprint or even a second line - perhaps smaller in size as a test - using more of the vintage 1930s and 1940s art in addition to the 50s to 70s art. I think it would do well and would certainly be nostalgic to quilt shop owners who are familiar with Nancy Drew. I'm not sure of what your experience has been with the fabric, be it online or in your local areas, but I'd love to hear feedback in the comments. Only 1 quilt shop in my Phoenix area appeared to even stock it unless I missed some--but I called dozens of shops, some had no idea what I was talking about. All around it is great fabric and is very nice quality. Moda did a great job on it.

Chapter 2: SLEUTH-tacular Sewing Projects

My Mom is a quilter and loves to sew, so she has been busy working on some Nancy Drew projects. So far she has made pillow cases with nice French seams and has completed the quilt top for a Nancy Drew quilt for me using blues and yellows in the fabric. I love the border she did using one of the styles of book spine fabric--it really makes the quilt look so nicely finished. We are working on the back of the quilt and then she has a quilting friend who will likely quilt it with her longarm quilting machine. Then we'll start work on another one. One of our next projects is going to be a Nancy Drew shower curtain using the silhouette endpapers fabric. You can see the whole quilt top above and here's a close-up:

My Mom used a pattern called Summer Salsa Quilt pattern for the main part of the quilt - you can find that free pattern here. Moda fabrics used include: Book Spines, Endpapers, Blue and Yellow Magnifying Glasses, Blue Dots, Blue Nancy Faces and "Nancy Drew" Logo with Nancy.

Quite a few Nancy Drew collectors and members of my Nancy Drew Sleuths fan group have purchased fabric and have been working on projects too and some have commissioned items by others. I wanted to share some of those images with you below - so many neat and SLEUTH-tacular ideas!
