Nancy Drew Books: Scary Things Kids (& Adults) Do #119

After spending time vicariously adventuring to Canada with Nancy to brave the wild woods and find a hollow oak, some little taper was prescient - they knew the burlap/farmhouse look would soon be in style!

Nancy Drew Mystery of the 99 Steps Halloween Party Drew-O-Ween

My annual Nancy Drew Halloween Party - Drew-O-Ween was a lot of fun this year! My theme was book #43 The Mystery of the 99 Steps, the classic Nancy Drew book set mostly in France, so we had a haunted Paris/Ghostly alchemist theme going in the decor and activities.

In addition to the recreated 99 steps on the porch, there was a 99 Steps Trivia contest and prizes were given out - including a neat book cover puzzle sent from Betsy & Books on Bay in Savannah, GA. I fixed Julia Child's Beef Bourguignon and we had salad plus lemon bars, Rice Krispie treats and more goodies that Bess would have approved of!

Nancy Drew Book Titles Category on Jeopardy

Nancy Drew was recently featured on the game show, Jeopardy, and got a whole category to herself! You had to complete these Nancy Drew classic book titles. Frequently enough, Nancy Drew appears as a question in some form or another about the popular sleuth  on Jeopardy - once the original Carolyn Keene, Mildred Wirt Benson, was the subject of a question.

Thanks to Sleuth Gina for letting me share these images!

Nancy Drew - Teenage Sleuth - Coming to the CW - Finally!

If At First You Don't Succeed, Try, Try Again! CBS, who has an option on Nancy Drew, has failed twice to secure a Nancy Drew pilot, thanks to ....

cough cough terrible concept choices cough cough

However, they're starting over with a new concept - the CW - and Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, who have created successful teenage dramas. Yes, you read that right, teenage. You know, like Nancy Drew! The concept sounds so intriguing. It's such an original idea- well, mostly original to Hollywood anyways, not to loyal readers of teenage sleuth Nancy Drew for generations since 1930

It's so brilliantly original, that it's surely bound to work, right? Stay tuned.....

If you can't tell, I'm quite psyched about it! Totally on board. I mean, Hollywood! Your Mystery's IT Girl has been under your nose all along - she's bold, brave, daring, independent, classy, smart and sophisticated. She's not flawed in ways that don't inspire us. She's fantasy entertainment. She's not bumbling, she's not a fish out of water, she's not an outsider on the fringe. She's a well-rounded well-liked girl and she is a mystery magnet. Romance is subtle. Mystery is her true love. These are the things that are beloved about her. So, stick with those characteristics no matter how modern the setting, and you can't go terribly wrong.

Most important, Nancy Drew's got moxie and she gets things done - solving the most baffling of mysteries and she has motivated generations of girls and boys to better themselves. Including Supreme Court Justices like Sonia Sotomayor, who cites Nancy Drew as an influence. All the women who have been on the Supreme Court do. Go figure...

Who inspired Supreme Court Justices!? THIS GIRL did that - take notes Hollywood - here she is:

Nancy Drew Brew at Books & Brews

In March, I visited Indianapolis on a research trip for my Mildred Wirt Benson biography and to attend the PCA conference. Several Sleuths and I visited a neat "brewk" store - Books & Brews - featuring brews based on literary characters - of course they had a Nancy "Brew!" Described as a citra-hopped pale ale, it lives up to its name. We of course had to get glasses and tees and cans for our collections. If you're in the area, they have several locations, check them out!
